About Echo Park Film Center

Echo Park Film Center is a non-profit media arts organization committed to providing equal and affordable community access to film/video resources via five channels: a neighborhood microcinema, free and nominal cost education programs, a comprehensive film equipment and service retail department, a green-energy mobile cinema & film school, and a touring film festival showcasing local established and emerging filmmakers. We feel it is imperative that more members of marginalized and underserved communities become active, empowered participants in the creation and dissemination of experimental, documentary and narrative film in order to truly reflect the many voices and visions that make up the fabric of contemporary American life. With a special focus on “at risk” neighborhood youth, Echo Park Film Center programs and services are positive catalysts for new opportunities though the medium of film.

Those Weird Subsidies!

Discussion with artist Ian Haig + Deputy Consul General of the Netherlands, Hans van den Dool

Tuesday, March 25, 2008 / 7:30 PM
18th Street Arts Center

We hear about it all the time. What's up with those privileged artists in far away countries whose art-making is largely underwritten by government sponsored subsidies -- be they individual grants or project grants. How does that work? Does it make for good art? Does it make for happy artists? Happy collectors? Join us in this unscientific sociological cultural economic investigation.

Current artist in residence Ian Haig is the recipient of a plethora of art project funding over the past 20 years. From numerous discussions about the relationship between art and funding, Ian has been cornered into sharing with us his candid views and the uncensored version of what this does to art production, and the pros and cons of being a bona fide funded Aussie artist.

Hans van den Dool is Deputy Consul General of the Netherlands in Los Angeles since 2003. As both Consul for Economic Affairs and Consul for Cultural Affairs, Hans actively promotes the synergy between thses two tasks, forging links between the creative industries and the world of art. A sociologist and political scientist, he received his higher education by the State University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, and the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium.

Morgan Barnard, currently residing in New Zealand, teaches at the Victoria University School of Design in the Digital Media Design program. Barnard is also apart of an arts collective called Sentimental Plastics.
Barnard, will be discussing the various cross-disciplinary approaches to working with digital media in a design context.
He will also be introducing us to Sentimental Plastics, a council project that was part of Wellington Urban Design week. The project focused on the plastic bag; how people use them, what people think about them, how they make them feel, and offered solutions on ways to upcycle bags to be re-used rather than thrown in the dump. Sentimental Plastics aim was to raise people’s awareness about this common object in the urban environment and hopefully make them think about how they use plastic bags.
