18th Street Arts Center presents the group exhibition, “Imaging LA: International Photographers on the Great Western Metropolis,” April 15-June 9, 2006 at 18th Street Arts Center, 1639 18th Street, Santa Monica. With landscapes and portraits on film and digital media by four photographers from different countries, this exhibition posits numerous reframings of the public, socio-cultural perception of Los Angeles. The opening reception is Saturday, April 15, 6-8:30pm and part of ArtNight at 18th Street, a free visual and performing arts event with open studios, a free concert and more. See www.18thstreet.org for more details.
In “Imaging LA,“ five contemporary photographers train their lenses on people and places surrounding Los Angeles. Olivier Culmann (France) delves into the states of being of dozens of L.A. residents watching television. John Mullin (USA) explores the muted energy of back alleys of Venice Beach at night. Eva Castringius (Germany) posits her works as simultaneously active and passive witnesses to the technologization of Southern California landscapes. Mare Milin (Croatia) exposes the realities of war and contemporary life on ordinary people. Finally, Heidi Wood (Australia/France) discovers and frames hidden meanings in advertising slogans and snapshot portraits of L.A. residents. Each artist attempts to peel away at the visual and physical layers of this most virtual of urban sprawls.
