18th Street Arts Center presents “Depicting Action,” an international exhibition of time-based live art, running July 15 – September 29, 2006. Organized by performance artist/curator Jamie McMurry, the exhibition features artists from Germany, Ireland, Britain, Canada, and the USA working to redefine the boundaries of performance and live art. The ArtNight Reception event is Saturday, July 15, 2006, 6:00 - 8:30pm, featuring opening studios, free concert by legendary lesbian folksinger Phranc, and opening reception for “Kaleidoscopic Gaze,” new painting/sculpture installation by Christine Morla and Eric J. Smail. For more details, go to www.18thstreet.org.

“Depicting Action” brings together some of the leading established and emerging voices in live art from five different countries. From pushing the limits of the body’s endurance to the enactment of socio-political themes to the meaning of audience interaction, these nine artists create intense, visionary work rarely presented in Los Angeles.

The interdisciplinary approach to contemporary art has recently dominated major exhibitions all over the world, its appeal and power growing greater each year. As innovative artists seek to find and fill the spaces in between art mediums, incredible discoveries are made and shared with audiences hungry for new forms of communication between artist and viewer.

Installation and performance have often intersected, and the number of spaces incorporating the two genres are vast. There have been examinations of all that lies between that have spawned an incredible multi-generational and international community of artists and educators mixing mediums to create new forms. The immense diversity, international renown and artistic virtuosity of many artists working in installation and/or performance has challenged and excited art patrons from years past to present day.

18th Street Arts Center and Powderkeg Contemporary Performance have joined to present new works by artists we feel are expertly working to further these observations. This series represents both emerging and established international artists engaged in this practice and seeks to further the proliferation of an important and vibrant exploration of time-based practice.
