18th Street Arts Center presents “The principal object of faith,” works by Jen Heaslip and Tamar Kardashov and curated by Jamie Greenberg, July 23 – September 30, 2005 at 18th Street Arts Center, 1639 18th Street, Santa Monica. The reception will be Saturday, July 23, 6-8:30pm with open studios by 18th Street Arts Center artists-in-residence and a live concert by world music/funk band, The Bonedaddys, at 7:30pm. The show opens and runs simultaneously with the group art show, “Compulsive Repetition: (Re)reading the Object in Space,” curated by Alma Ruiz, Associate Curator at MOCA-LA. Both exhibitions are supported by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
Jamie Greenberg (Curator): The work in this show comes from two women with different approaches to spiritual imagery; graphically, culturally and religiously. Strong conviction emanates from both sets of work, although it is dealt with in clearly different manners. Kardashov incorporates generic icons and found materials to create new objects, complex and fragile in their manifestation, as clearly personal shrines. Heaslip's work bears a far sharper edge, combining ancient myth with Protestant notions of futility and strength, creating portraiture that is both lighthearted and acerbic. "The principal object of faith," as defined by these artists, is neither present nor definitive, much as in common practice.
18th Street programs are supported by the James Irvine Foundation, California Community Foundation, Trust for Mutual Understanding, National Endowmwnt for the Arts, Santa Monica City Cultural Affairs Division, L.A.
