18th Street Arts Center proudly presents “The Leopard’s Spots: Between Art, Performance and Club Culture,” a group show of visual and performance artists active in the LA club scene in the 90’s and curated by Alex Donis. The exhibition runs August 7 – October 16, 2004 at 18th Street Arts Center, 1639 18th Street, Santa Monica, north of Olympic Boulevard. The opening reception is Saturday, August 7, 7-9pm with fashion performances at 8pm. The closing party is Saturday, October 16, 7pm-midnight. There will also be a film screening of the classic cult feature films, “Hustler White” by Bruce LaBruce and Rick Castro, and “Days of Pentecost” by Lawrence Elbert on Thursday, September 16 at 7pm.

"The Leopard Spots: Between Art, Performance and Club Culture" examines the cross-fertilization between visual and performance artists who used the allure of the night club along with the cloak and culture of the street as influence and performative venues. The 18 artists in this exhibition are part of a period within Los Angeles art history whose impact and trajectory now define the landscape of contemporary art practice. This exhibit will present a collection of paintings, photography, art objects, fashion, video, and other memorabilia capturing underground art events and club happenings that ripple with erotics, glamour, and dangerous dark places.
