18th Street presents its final exhibition of 2009 entitled Without A Car In The World (100 Car-less Angelinos Tell Stories of Living in Los Angeles). This exhibition features 100 photographs by artist Diane Meyer with accompanying narratives from persons who live without a car in Los Angeles. Meyer’s exhibit was inspired by her recent decision to give up her car and navigate through the city using a combination of walking, biking and public transportation.

18TH STREET RECEIVES FOUR NEW GRANTS

The City of Santa Monica and the Santa Monica Arts Commission have awarded two grants from its Community Access and Participation program. A CAPS award for $6100 will fund 18th Street’s bi-annual ArtNights. Twice a year 18th Street throws open its doors with an evening long offering of exhibitions, concerts, and open studios; all free to the public. The CAPS grant will fund this project as well provide support for two additional exhibition openings.

A second award of $6100 for the Latino CAPS program will commission artist James Rojas to engage the community of young persons at the Pico Youth and Family Center in a creative urban planning process exploring the diverse history of Santa Monica. The project will commence this January and culminate during our May 1, 2010 ArtNight. Keep checking in to our web site for details! Past ArtNights can be seen at www.18thstreet.org

We are also pleased to announce the awarding of $50,100 by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission to 18th Street. This two year operational support grant will fund staff salaries and further support 8 California residencies in 18th Street’s galleries. These residencies will be a means of engaging the public through dynamic arts projects and exhibitions selected through an open call.

The Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs Cultural Exchange International Pilot Grant program has awarded 18th Street a $5000 grant towards the 2010 residency of Iranian artist Mamali Shafahi. Mr. Shafahi is a gay artist whose challenging performance work investigating Muslim male identity issues has brought him intense scrutiny within Iran, and acclaim outside. We are pleased that this will be the first residency by an Iranian artist at 18th Street. The project is also supported in part by a grant from the UNESCO-Bursaries for Artists, which will pay for the artists’ airfare from Iran to Los Angeles.

Debuting in 18th Street’s project room from October 17-October 30, Resident artist Yvette Gellis’ project entitled Aqueous/Igneous is a continued investigation and outgrowth of her practice as a painter. Gellis challenges the distinctions between installation, painting and environment, by expanding the idea of taking painting into a three-dimensional space.
